All day I have been thinking about Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It's still a little bit away, but it has been on my mind all day today! Have you ever been to a Día de los Muertos get together? When I lived in New Mexico I attended a feast at a friends house for Día de los Muertos. It was beautiful, fun, and quite special. The family had come to America years ago by the hard work and cunning of the patriarch. Now, quite settled they had an altar year round for loved ones lost, and for all the lost souls who died attempting to cross the border and were never heard from again.
During Día de los Muertos the family's altar was overflowing and adorned with food, gifts, letters, and special trinkets that were or would have been special to those who couldn't be with us. Another beautiful thing they did, aside from cooking a special menu, chosen especially for the family's aunt who had recently passed, was to set an extra place at the table for her. Full plate, napkin, cutlery and the works.
Thank you J. Ramirez and family for the inspiration.
Today, I made a little ink and watercolor Día de los Muertos skull drawing.
